Building Information Modeling from Cadway - the way forward

We at Cadway are early adopters of the BIM process, utilising BIM capable software in the form of Autodesk Revit. A smooth BIM progression can be achieved when managed by a specialist BIM facilitator working with consultants who are using compatible software platforms. The same model that's ultimately used for construction can also be used for photorealistic and stylised marketing.

  • Typically BIM uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modelling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. The process produces the Building Information Model (BIM), which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, quantities and properties of building components.
  • This has the reality of turning a 2D plan into a 3D model with 4/5D stages possible. It allows for all service providers including Architectural, Structural, MEP, and others, to input information into a format that gives a real-time picture of how they all relate to the final constructed building.
  • This process allows for earlier detection of clashes/errors which is a huge advantage and long awaited feature for all members involved in the design and construct process.

Something that seems to deter a lot of the Australian AEC industry is the liability issues and who owns the model? This comes down to a new term called Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). There are some exciting moves forward in this department with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) now drafting new IPD contracts. Its definitely coming people so be ready! We will have some more information on IPD next month.
