Schindler selected for new Sydney harbor project

Schindler is to supply 106 elevators for a new waterfront development in Sydney, Australia, known as 'Barangaroo South'. The elevators have an A-rating for energy efficiency and are equipped with Schindler's transit management system, the PORT Technology, which optimizes passenger travel around buildings.

Covering a total area of 22 hectares, and valued at A$6 billion, 'Barangaroo' is an entire city quarter in itself and aims to demonstrate how urban populations can live sustainably. It is being built on the western edge of the Sydney CBD, and will command a large area of the city's harbor.

Schindler is supplying elevator systems for three office towers in the development's commercial hub. The contract includes 78 Schindler 7000 high-rise elevators, as well as 28 Schindler 5500 elevators. All units will be controlled by Schindler's PORT Technology, which guides occupants around a building and enables them to reach their destinations quickly and easily.

"Barangaroo is Sydney's largest and most important property development," said the Managing Director of Schindler Australia, Alex McFarlane. "We have worked with the developers, Lend Lease, in the past and we are delighted that they chose Schindler for this important and high-profile project."

'Climate positive'

Barangaroo aims to be the first development in Sydney that is entirely 'climate positive'. This means that it will generate at least as much energy and water as it consumes and will recycle more waste than it generates. The Schindler 7000 installations will contribute thanks to an energy-recuperation system that feeds excess power back into the building's electricity grid. The Schindler 7000 elevator has been given 'A' rating, according to the measurement standard, VDI 4707, developed by the Association of German Engineers.

Installation of the elevators will start in early 2013 and is due to be completed by 2015.
