Utilising a variety of materials and finishes, this lovely kitchen is an entertainer's haven.

Embodying much of the charm of yesteryear, this highly practical kitchen utilises the best of a range of fixtures and finishes to give it a warm and welcoming appeal. The room boasts a number of special features including a custom-designed island and casual eating area that makes the best use of the space and provides seating for up to 4-5 people.

Designer Andrew Dee worked hard to ensure that the kitchen would be in keeping with the style of the home. "The use of eclectic materials ensures that the kitchen integrates well into the living area," he says. "We also matched many of the moulds used throughout the house into the kitchen's design."

The layout of the kitchen is very interesting and makes great use of visual techniques to create an appealing form. Placing the casual eating area perpendicular to the island bench, and slightly offset from centre, helps blur the boundaries between the kitchen and adjoining spaces as well as providing balance with the rear asymmetrical cabinetry.

Incorporating many elements to give it an age-old charm, such as fluted columns, turned posts, glass display areas, butler's sink, antique tapware and an old-style freestanding cooker, the kitchen sits proudly within the home. It has become the central focus of family life and the main gathering point when friends drop by.
