Background
Galong Redemptorist Monastery is nestled among the rolling hills of the southern table lands of NSW. Known as 'the castle' this building is full of history. The original homestead dates back to the 1840's, built by convict Ned Ryan.

In 1917 the Redemptorist movement took possession and it became a college for religious training and secondary schooling. The college closed in 1975 and its doors have been re-opened as a popular Retreat Centre and a joint ministry, currently being run by the Redemptorists and the Sisters of St. Joseph, Goulburn.

The retreat required a solution to service the existing dining hall, the newly restored Ryan House and to transport material from the store room to the kitchen.

Approach
The dumbwaiter needed to withstand the demands of a commercial environment. The solution... the Premium Series, 3 level dumbwaiter. This unit is designed to cater for constant heavy work with a large volume stainless steel lined lift car and a huge 100Kg capacity. The lift car was fitted with dual openings, the front opening used to access the storage room on the ground floor and the kitchen on the first floor, the rear opening used to access the mezzanine level, the Ryan house servery room.

Challenges
This commercial application required the lift shaft to be fire rated, to prevent a fire moving between floors. The lift shaft was constructed in brick and the access openings were fitted with fire rated door jams and doors.

Results
The dumbwaiter has become a vital tool for the staff. It quietly and reliably performs a variety of transportation tasks. It has eliminated the hazardous task of carrying heavy goods upstairs from the storeroom to the kitchen. The transfer of prepared meals, and the clearing of finished meals to the Ryan house dining room is a seamless transition.

At the end of the night the garbage bags are loaded and transported to ground level.
