Wonderful Kitchens centrepiece kitchen islands

When designer Andrew Dee from Wonderful Kitchens embarked on this kitchen design, he knew he needed to create a special space. With a detailed brief from the owners that included a request for a contemporary-style space, a large island and enough seating for five, he got to work.

A simple colour scheme of natural tones was chosen and highlighted with bright whites for a stunning finish. The streamlined look of the kitchen is further enhanced by the lack of handles on the cabinets. An extended island bench not only provides additional preparation and serving space, but also serves well as a spot for a casual meal or to complete the day's homework.

The kitchen is not large, but it doesn't need to be, with every centimetre of space used to maximum advantage. Stainless-steel drawers ensure that there's plenty of storage space underbench, with a large pantry easily able to house all the owners' food items.

In cleverly creating a number of work zones within the kitchen, Andrew ensures the space operates efficiently at all times. The refrigerator and cooking appliances have been grouped together and placed in easy reach at one end of the kitchen along the same wall that houses the pantry. This makes it simple to unload shopping and keeps footsteps to a minimum.

The cleaning zone is located at the other end of the kitchen in a way that allows multiple users to undertake different tasks simultaneously without getting in each other's way. An additional sink has been placed in the island to assist with meal preparation duties.

Cool, neutral tones give the kitchen a calm and reassuring outlook and are the perfect backdrop for casual entertaining with family and friends.
