NEWS ARTICLE ARCHIVESTension Membrane Canopies from Tension Span StructuresProviding a sheltered courtyard for this aged care hostel in Fitzroy, Victoria, this tension membrane canopy rises above the surrounding rooftop, creating an arresting tensile fabric structure. The steel work of this tension membrane canopy is a "tree" structure, with two trunks holding up an interlocking series of branches supporting the membrane, producing a dynamic geometric effect when viewed from beneath. The long life Tedlar® fabric used in the canopy provides protection for the hostel's residents, blocking 100% of UV rays while still allowing an even lighting effect within the courtyard. Perched above the roof top, this tension membrane structure allows fresh air to circulate in the space beneath. It has been specifically designed to for the environment's wind loads, shaped to compensate for gusts of wind and with bracing cables to provide additional stability. Now in its 33rd year, Tension Span Structures has been designing and installing tension membrane canopies ranging in scope from playground shade structures through to an exhibition center housing a Russian space shuttle.
