Everything you need to know about Folding Arm Awnings

If you aren't looking to erect a permanent structure but still need a shading solution for your outdoor area then you may want to consider a retracting folding arm awning for the shade you need.

How does a Folding Arm Awning Work?

Mounted against a wall or secured into the eaves near the gutter this open style retractable awning is released either by turning a crank or by remote controlled electric motor.

A minimum of two strong arms glide along a track at the front of the awning as they open controlled by an elbow bend at the centre of the arm.

The angle of the slope (known as pitch) can be adjusted to fit requirements. However, the Folding arm awning is a shade product and should not be left out in inclement weather.

It is wise to invest in a wind and rain sensor which will automatically retract your awning when it detects rain or wind to avoid any costly mishaps when unattended.

Important things to consider when buying a Folding Arm Awning

  • Do you live in a high wind prone area?
  • Does your awning allow for pitch adjustment?
  • Are the fabrics certified ultra violet and what is the rating?
  • Do you live near the coast or large body of water?
  • Are the metals and powder coating used marine quality?
  • If motorised can the strength of the motor withstand the resistant force while the arms are retracting in high winds.
