Powder-coated stainless steel from Stainless Sections

Stainless steels many features may, in some circles, not include the possibility of adding colour to building facades. Known mainly for the metallic appearance that is so closely associated with the material, this is not normally considered a means of providing colour to architectural work.

An Adelaide school, the Sacred Heart School of Performing Arts, received colour uplift through the use of stainless steel cladding from Stainless Sections Pty Ltd. The Australian Stainless Steel Development Association has described the project as setting a new benchmark of the possibility for the fusion between decorative and functional design.

Specified by Trident Architects, the project used AN6 PCL stainless steel sheets for the interior and exterior cladding of the Assembly Hall and Music Department building.

Chosen for its hard wearing and low maintenance properties, the stainless steel cladding also added colour, in line with the creative nature of the activities performed within the building, keeping a strong focus on the aesthetic aspects.

The face side of the stainless steel was powder-coated and then linish-patterned to produce a warm, coloured background.

Stainless Sections Roy Carter said that the product gives users the best of both worlds. The material allows colour to be added, without compromising wear-ability of the metal surface.
