Dust Cleaning your water tanks Queensland by Action Tanks

HAS YOUR TANK BEEN AFFECTED BY THE DUST STORM?

Your roof and gutters would have collected a large accumulation of dirt and without post storm clean up this dirt will be entering your tank with the next lot of rain.

Sunshine Coast, Qld, Monday 5th October 2009, If you're a resident of South East Queensland, it is more than likely that you have been affected by the recent dust storms. Your roof and gutters would have collected a large accumulation of dirt and without post storm clean up this dirt will be entering your tank with the next lot of rain. This can affect the water quality and can cause damage to fixtures and appliances that your tank system is connected to, such as your pump, toilet and washing machine.

Now is the time to clean your roof and gutters before the next rain. Action Tanks recommend the following:

1. Connect a piece flexible drainage pipe to the tank water inlet pipe (This is the pipe that delivers rainwater to your tank) or place a large plastic bag in the inlet strainer so that it hangs over the edge of the strainer and prevents roof water entering the tank.

2. Divert the flexi pipe to the storm water drain or a soakage area if you can, other wise simply let the water overflow off the top of your tank.

3. Wash down your roof and gutters. If you cannot wash down your roof and gutters immediately, leave the flexi pipe connected until the next rainfall.

4. When the roof and gutters are clean, or when you can see the clean water coming out of the flexi pipe, you can then disconnect the flexi pipe. Depending on the amount of accumulated dirt and rainfall intensity, it may take 10-30 minutes before the roof and gutters are clean.

If your tank system has a first flush device steps 1 through 4 are still recommended until clean water is coming from the roof. Clean and check the drainage pipe and outlet of the diverter to make sure there is no blockage.

The outside of your pump system and switching device must be clean as well. Dirt can cause damage to the sensitive electrical components. Action Tanks recommend a pump cover to protect the pump from the elements.

In the event that dirt has already entered your tank, we recommend that you contact your nearest tank cleaner to remove sediment and contaminants.
