Cool CarpetT launched in conjunction with Interface's new i2 range

Interface is launching its Cool CarpetT programme in Australia in conjunction with its new i2 range of modular floorcoverings. i2 features inherently diverse modules which are randomly laid to create a unique floorplate with several functional benefits, including replacement modules blending seamlessly and reduced installation costs and product waste.

i2 is also a significant transition towards zero waste in manufacturing while the Cool CarpetT programme ensures all greenhouse gas emissions for the life of the carpet (raw materials extraction and processing, transportation, manufacturing, organisational adminstration, maintenance and end-of-life) are completely offset resulting in a climate neutral product.

Interface i2 explores variation - light and shadow and the interplay of colours - creating interesting and original floorplates. "The goal was to find out what could be learned about the natural design system - there is no perfect flower and there is no solid colour; it's just a diverse system. The goal then turned to designing modules the way nature designs, aesthetically, its modules," said David Oakey."

The in-built variations within the i2 modules make dye lots irrelevant, so replacement tiles blend with the existing flooring, without the need to carry attic stock, significantly increasing the lifecycle of the product.  Due the lack of dye lots, i2 is also ideal for progressive installations.

The random laid nature of the product also makes i2 much quicker and easier to install and generates approximately 90% less product waste than conventional carpet, reducing costs. These benefits elevated EntropyT, the original product in the series, to the fastest selling product in Interface's history and spawned the development of the i2 range.

The natural world has inspired design elements in some of the new i2 ranges - Adaptations, Woodland Way, Nature Trails and Approximations - capturing the essence of wild grains bending in the fields, the position of foliage on the forest floor and broken grid patterns one may see from the air or in cracked earth.

However, David Oakey has pushed the boundaries of the concept further, incorporating art deco, light reflection and geometry design inspirations, while maintaining the diversity and randomness that are the key to the functionality of nature's design.  Modernism transposes shapes and shades to form understated geometric patterns.  The bolder, Chrysler-building inspired, Cubism i2 overlaps geometric shapes, while Juxtapositions uses abstract geometric shapes and dramatic angles to make a striking statement.

As well as being a significant transition towards zero waste in manufacturing and a major step in Interface's sustainability journey, i2 products are also the first to be incorporated into the Cool CarpetT programme in the Asia-Pacific region.  Interface world-wide has made significant progress in reducing the organisation's manufacturing environmental footprint and lifecycle analysis of Interface's products show that only 10% of the greenhouse gas emissions result from the Interface manufacturing process.

The Cool CarpetT programme analyses the total greenhouse gas emissions of the entire life of the carpet (raw material extraction and processing, transportation, organisational administration, maintenance to end-of-life) and offsets these emissions through the support of projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions approved by the Climate Neutral Network.
