Seawater desalination - a modern solution from Georg Fischer Piping Systems

Wherever groundwater is difficult or even impossible to reach, other ways must be found to make water available to the population in the right quantity and quality. The technology of today makes it possible to desalinate seawater and use it as drinking water.

Depending on the population density and the requirements, seawater desalination plants can be built for single-family homes, for farms or for entire cities. For these plants to function completely reliably and to keep their design compact and economical, Georg Fischer strives to develop, improve and optimize products for its customers in water treatment.

Some examples of our optimized products for plant engineering are fittings that save space and installation time; mechanical, electronic or electromagnetic flow meters and Signet analytical instruments; automated valves for all types of applications as well as the necessary connections to state-of-the art bus systems.

Seawater desalination and reverse osmosis. Simply speaking, to desalinate seawater it must be pressed through filters that separate the salt from the water. In further steps, the desalted water is processed so that it can be used for consumption. Here it is important that the efficiency and the filters are adapted in such a way as to warrant effective operation while also keeping costs manageable.

The increasing demands of customers and the growing population make it necessary to provide huge amounts of potable water. Thanks to improved technologies, it is now possible to build expansively dimensioned seawater desalination and reverse osmosis plants. On ships, too, drinking water must be supplied via desalination systems.

Largest reverse osmosis plant. Thanks to our global sales network, we are able to support projects from the design phase through installation all the way to final assembly. Technical teams operating worldwide are available to assist customers with a wealth of experience. These services were very useful during the installation of the world's largest reverse osmosis plant, which is an integral part of seawater desalination in Fujeirah in the United Arab Emirates. The plant has a capacity of 100 million gallon water a day.

The close cooperation between GF Piping Systems and the plant engineers enabled us to overcome bottlenecks and several technical problems. Local craftsmen received training from Georg Fischer on how to work with the material PP-H, in addition to training with the fusion machines. By regularly monitoring progress at the construction site, we were able to warrant the consistent quality of this installation.
