Anglican Girls School Gets Floor Safety Overhaul

Danebank, an Anglican School for Girls was founded in 1933 when a group of Hurstville parents, led by the Crakanthorp family, engaged Miss Edith Roseby Ball to educate their young children. She began with five girls and boys, teaching them on the back veranda and in the backyard of a local home at 104 The Avenue Hurstville. Within two years, Miss Roseby Ball had purchased the school's first building, at 86 Park Road Hurstville, and started a process of ongoing development and expansion.

The school's existing pebble crete surfaces were created over twenty years ago, both at the Junior as well as the Senior schools. These surfaces started to look aged and also the surface slip resistive quality has deteriorated over time. Regular safety review identified some potential safety issues and the school has contacted Global Safe Technologies Australia for a more comprehensive surface safety and compliance overview.

A Global Safe representative attended the site and after inspection, provided the school with a comprehensive report regarding to current floor safety status and the requirements of the relevant Australian Slip Resistance standard and and Disability (Access to Premises) standard 2010 legislation. For the pebble crete walking paths the Supa Safe product speckle coated version and for the stair nosing, the Safe Grip Ultimate product was proposed by Global. Both of these products have been installed is several locations as well as they also had extensive testing using the accelerated wear testing method. The test results have shown that both products have a very high and sustainable slip resistive quality, and very likely to provide a long term solution for the school.

The recommendations were accepted and a team of accredited installers carried out the work. The work has been carried out during the school holiday ensuring no inconvenience for students, staff or visitors to the school.

The project was completed within the specified constraints and the surfaces have been independently tested by a NATA accredited slip resistance company. The test results ensured that the anti slip nosing across the complex now has a Very Low notional contribution of the floor surface to the risk of slipping when water wet. The stair nosing also has the required luminance contrast to make it fully compliant with the Disability Standard 2010 and AS 1428.4:2009 specifications.

Global Safe and its accredited applicators are the only ones on the market offering and independent slip resistance testing as part of of any commercial project. This test is very important to our clients for two reasons;

  • It provides an independent quality assurance that the anti slip work completed is compliant with the relevant slip resistance standards.
  • It provides the necessary documentation for the client in case of an unlikely event of a slip and fall happening on the surface.

School management is very satisfied with the entire project outcome. They communicated their total satisfaction with the quality of the workmanship and the professionalism and dedication of the application team during the entire project.

Global Safe has also offered its industry unique Surface safety Risk Management Program© as part of the solution, at no additional cost, which the school has taken up. This program includes regular inspections and reporting of the surface condition for commercial clients.
