Light Weight Industrial Roller Doors from Ideal Doors

When we think of industrial doors we typically think of large factory doors. Usually they are steel roller shutters but they can also be lighter weight steel roller doors or even aluminium shutters, sectional panel doors or structural panel doors such as fold-up doors. For familiarity, we will summarise the door types below.

Roller shutters have a heavy duty axle assembly and a curtain made up of horizontal interlocking slats (blades) which slide up and down vertical tracks on each side of the opening as they roll on or off the axle, often called a roller, drum or roller drum.

Roller doors are a lighter version of the same thing. The axle is light weight with nylon or pressed metal wheels to which the curtain is fixed. The curtain is made from roll or press-formed sheets that are lock-seamed together to form a single panel from top to bottom. The edges of the curtain have Nylofelt webbing fixed to it so that the door operates quietly and there is no lubrication required in the guides.

Aluminium roller shutters are similar to steel roller shutters except they are lighter duty and the curtain is made from extruded or roll-formed aluminium slats. They are often used for smaller doorways where they can be operated by hand or where corrosion is a problem.

Sectional panel doors are similar in design to the modern garage doors but typically have steel or aluminium frames or sheet metal panels and stronger hardware.

Structural doors are available in many configurations and are used typically for very large openings or where higher levels of security are required. Examples of common structural doors are the Bi fold door and Tilt-up door. Structural doors are commonly counterbalanced with weights rather than springs. Because they are a panel door there is no limit to the finish designs that can be applied to the face of the door.
