Business Basics (Part Two) - principles to maximize your results!

Many business owners love the cut and thrust of day to day involvement in their business, they love the variety, they thrive on making the hundreds of small decisions that inevitably need to be made on a daily basis and they are proud of their role as the "hub" in their business. They need to be needed.

What they fail to appreciate is that whilst ever they continue this intense level of personal involvement, without nurturing and empowering trusted staff to step up into their shoes, they are not business owners - they are really someone who has bought or created a job for themselves. A true business owner is just that, someone who owns a business that produces income for them, without the need for their direct personal involvement as a staff member in the business. "How do I make that transition," I hear you ask. Start by implementing the following strategies:

  • Begin work today on a plan to replace yourself in the business;
  • Set a timeframe in which your plan will be completed and do not deviate;
  • Understand that you must follow the plan-this process will not just happen;
  • Constantly impart knowledge and skills to existing team members and start to develop a team or organizational chart detailing job responsibilities;
  • Empower and trust your people to grow in their roles and the business will grow as a result of their new found responsibility and positive attitude;
  • Accept that they will not be perfect to begin with and reward the 80% that they do well, do not indulge in negative or demoralizing criticism ;
  • Remember that you are the teacher-they are your students, the quality of their "pass mark" is a measure of your ability to teach them what you know;
  • Systemise the routine tasks and humanize the exceptions;
  • If you do not have a standout employee who naturally rises to the top and is capable of doing your job then start looking outside your business;
  • Know that change is painful for everyone in the short term, but it does move people first to react and then to take action.
