Well designed lighting can deliver dramatic cost reductions and more - Only from The Lighting Council

"In 1999 Australia spent approximately $15 billion on electricity. Lighting accounted for some $5 billion of this and resulted in 50 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emission per annum. Energy-efficient lighting and lighting controls can save Australia $1.25 billion per annum, can improve Australia's international competitiveness, can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 12 metric tonnes per annum and can create a multi-billion dollar industry with job creation, exports and wealth creation for Australia." Peter Szental - Director and Policy Chair, Sustainable Energy Industry Association (SEIA)

Lighting Council Australia, with its parent organisation AEEMA, invests considerable time and energy working with the Australian Greenhouse Office and similar bodies, to ensure continual improvement in environmental standards.

Green purchasing guide

The Lighting Technical Committee is currently working with the Australian Greenhouse Office to prepare a guideline checklist of green lighting products for acquisition by Government. Lighting is expected to be a pilot program under a broader checklist covering a number of industries.

Minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for ballasts

Lighting Council Australia and AEEMA have worked with the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) to introduce minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for lighting ballasts in 2003. The proposed MEPS regime, which accords with the timetable set by the European Directive, specifies that low loss ballasts (also referred to as B2 ballasts) will be the minimum from 1 March 2003 onwards. Standard, or 'Code', ballasts will be excluded from that date. A review of the MEPS levels will be undertaken in 2005. By working closely with the AGO, Lighting Council Australia has ensured an outcome which is positive, both for the environment and for Australian production and jobs.
