Sails look better and are more stable in design when elevations change from corner to corner. By creating a high and a low point, the sail can slope, be more stable under wind pressure and shed water. To achieve this, fixing points or poles need to be arranged at different heights.

If you are using poles to support your sail, make allowances for sound footings, impact on underground utilities and any building regulations. We can give some input on pole height and diameter and fixing depths. If you are unsure of what fixing depth to use, you should consult local engineering services if you need advice.

When thinking about installing a sail - check for availability of suitable load bearing fixing points, the sun's direction and the area needed for shade. Once sails are under tension the sides are subject to curvature and smaller than the original size. Space also needs to be allowed for fixing devices at each corner.

Sails work by using tensioning devices called turnbuckles which are anchored or attached to walls or poles.
