Viking pump spurs on challenging application

Kelair was approached by a customer to pump PIB oil. The application was particularly challenging as the product was hot at 100°C, viscous 5000- 7500 cst and the pump had to generate 21 bar discharge pressure.

Kelair offered a Viking Spur Gear SG-0716 pump which is able to address all the product application criteria with the following features and benefits:-

OVERSIZED PORTS
Normally the SG-716 pump comes with 1" connections. However due the viscous nature of the product, we had to be sure it would flow into the pump, thus the 1.5" oversized inlet construction was selected.

DISCHARGE PRESSURE REQUIREMENTS
The pumps are constructed from heat-treated gears and case-hardened steel shafts. Each gear is supported by two bushes and this ensures maximum possible operation at high pressures.

The SG series pumps also incorporate a lip seal design which can handle pressures of up to 500psi.

HIGH TEMPERATURE REQUIREMENTS
As standard Viking SG series pumps incorporate needle bearings, in this instance, given the high temperature, cast iron bushes were offered as a special design feature.

Also all elastomers within the pump supplied were Viton, not standard Buna. This ensured all elastomers were suitable to handle the 100°C operating temperature.

INTEGRAL PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
As standard, the SG series pumps incorporate an integral pressure relief valve. This permits the bypassing of fluid and prevents excessive pressure build up in the discharge line.

COMPACT SIZE / EASY INSTALLATION
The Viking SG series pumps are available in a bell housing arrangement so an IEC motor can be directly coupled to the pump.

This gives the pump a smaller footprint as there is no baseplate required and no coupling alignment required between pump/ motor.
