Unique Cellular Building Structure from Rondo Building Services

King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC)

A unique cellular structure derived from crystalline forms is currently under construction in the hot deserts of Saudi Arabia. The soon -to -be iconic centre which is being built for KAPSARC was designed by the world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects. Conceptualised on the idea of 'connection', the building is designed as a crystalline structure composed of modular six-sided cells that are all interconnected, cementing the concept of 'connection' that the developers were aiming for.

Rondo Malaysia commenced work on the design and engineering of partitions and ceilings on this project in 2010, working alongside the successful contractor DEPA whom Rondo has worked with on numerous projects over the last five years. The unparalleled structure will feature a series of shaded outdoor spaces, courtyards, entrances, meeting areas, indoor gardens, corridors, underground tunnels and roof terraces.

The buildings steel structure which is derived from Rondo Steel Stud and Track as well as the external wall and roof panels are currently under construction and the ceiling and partition frame commenced supply in July of this year. Rondo Malaysia expects the main sector of the 2.5million dollar project to be complete by November 2012.

With regards to the development of the complex, special emphasis will be given to sustainability and several green building techniques will be utilised to achieve the prestigious LEED platinum certification. The use of shading and natural ventilation will help keep the indoor/outdoor spaces cool, while natural light will further reduce energy demands. Moreover, photovoltaic panels will also be integrated to provide renewable energy to the complex.

The campus will be home to research and development facilities, focusing on energy and environmental exploration and analysis. KAPSARC will be officially opened in 2013.
