High-Flow Drainage Grates for Highway Project by Hydro

Hydro Construction extended its services to the SH16 to Westgate Interchange Project with the supply of high flow drainage grates for the road improvement and maintenance upgrade. The project entailing the whole Northwestern Motorway between Lincoln Road and Westgate aims to bring better and safer transport connectivity for all.

Initiated by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), the Northwestern Motorway project has added 2.1km motorway lanes, a bus shoulder in both directions, and three new bridges. It's expected to support the rapid growth in Auckland's western suburbs and to be completed as part of the SH16 Northwestern Upgrades.

Working closely with NZTA and Hawkins Construction, Hydro Construction supplied their Drain Supreme Ductile Iron High-Flow Drainage Grate, in combination with their 300mm Co Cast Iron Edge Rail System. The landscape drainage solution has successfully carried large volumes of water away from the road, preventing any cases of blockage or flooding.

The high-flow drainage grates were built in compliance with AS 3996 for access covers and grates for use in vehicular and pedestrian areas. Certified under Load Class D210, they can withstand heavy commercial vehicles and roadways with a wheel load weighing approximately 8,000kg. The grates are also coated using KTL Coating, a technological finishing process and corrosion-resistant paint generally used to coat metal surfaces.

The Ductile Iron High-Flow Drainage Grates allowed for streamlined water ingress and ponding plus fast removal of water from road surfaces via large grate holes. Augmented with longitudinal fixation lugs and channel edge rails, high-flow drainage grates will stay firm even in the channel recess.

The security is improved using the Profix locking system to ensure optimum motorway safety. A simple yet ultimately robust fastening mechanism, the locking system is easy to install and operate with no special requirements or steps required for operators.

With the success of the installation of high-flow drainage grates in the SH16 to Westgate Interchange Project, through the help of Auckland Motorways (AMA) and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), the Ductile Iron High-Flow Drainage Grate with Profix Locking System has been officially endorsed by the New Zealand Government.
