Security Roller Shutters for Shops from Rollashield

security roller shutter for shopfront

How to choose a strong security roller shutter for a shop.

There are many types of roller shutters so the following factors should be considered before you purchase a shop front roller shutter.

1. The location of the shop - Is it inside a mall or is it on the street?

Inside a Mall
Inside a mall you have the extra protection of the mall security so you probably don't need a full blown security roller shutter. Usually inside a mall the centre management will dictate what type of roller shutter they will allow you to install.eg often the only type allowed is a clear polycarbonate roller shutter with clear anodised aluminium divider strips. Check with them first. If they are more flexible, you might want to go for one that has some visibility or ventilation but is still strong enough to protect the stock.

On the Steet
If the shop is on the street, you really need an extruded roller shutter NOT a roll formed one. Be careful because there is a price difference and while the roll formed one is cheaper and may seem OK, it is definitely not strong enough for a shop. It can easily be punched in and destroyed by a would be vandal. You will be wasting your money putting a roll formed shutter on a shop front. Pay a bit extra and get an extruded roller shutter, like Forceshield Commercial, and you will get a high security product. It is a case of you get what you pay for here.

2. Size of the shop front area to be covered

The wider the area to be covered, the stronger the product you will require. An extruded roller shutter is much stronger than a roll formed one so it can cover wider spans and still be strong.

Do you need to cover the shop front with one shutter in a single span? If you do,check that the roller shutter product can span the width without bending like a banana (lessening the security effect it will have).

3. Local Council Regulations

Councils do vary in the type of roller shutters they will allow on the street scape. Eg some councils only allow a grille type of roller shutter. Check first.

4. Operation

Normally a spring operated manual operation is used with a key locking system. However, if the roller shutter is over a certain weight, electric operation may be necessary. You can have a security keyswitch on the outside to operate the electric shutter if you wish. Consider the staff opening and closing the roller shutter. If you have female staff for example, an electric shutter may be better to avoid any OHS issues from lifting a heavy roller shutter.

5. Type of goods sold at the shop

Goods that are easy to carry and easy to resell like tobacco, computers and electrical goods are likely to be targets for thieves more so than bulkier goods. If you have goods that are at a higher risk an extruded roller shutter solid with no visibility is definitely best.

6. Price

Obviously price is an important factor however choose an appropriate roller shutter product after considering the factors described above and a company that is reputable with lots of experience in shop front shutters. The price will be worth it. You will have peace of mind knowing that you have done all you can to protect your valuable stock. Your insurance premium may be reduced too.
