How Do Open Joint Paving Systems Work?

When you use a pedestal paving system, there's no need to use bedding sand or grout between the joins. The pavers are suspended on adjustable pedestals and this means that water can drain more freely between the joins instead of pooling and potentially damaging the membrane underneath.

Pavers that are placed on a setting bed can be damaged more easily due to the restricted drainage above the waterproof membrane. This can potentially cause efflorescence and staining as well as damage to the paver support.

Open jointed systems consist of precast concrete pavers that are then supported on discrete pedestals. Because water can quickly drain from the surface to the membrane, there's no need for surface drains. This type of system is also straightforward to install and if any elements of the system need adjusting or fixing, they are easy to remove.

To ensure the best outcome when you're using an open joint paving system, the placement of the supporting pedestals, along with the joint size and spacing, needs to be very precise. This will ensure the surface water flows correctly through the joins and reduce the chance of experiencing any issues.
