Polycarbonate offers an alternative to Glass Awning

Designers have been exploring various options to replace glass in roofing and awning applications in order to reduce costs and handling hazards.

Allplastics recently provided a builder with 12 mm thick UV grade unbreakable polycarbonate panels which were CNC Routed to the curved shapes designed by the architect.

The curved shapes were fixed with steal posts and the result were a stunning awning in a residence in Wollongong, New South Wales. The supporting structures were much lighter than otherwise if glass was used resulting in cost savings.

The client John Fish commented "I am more than satisfied by the service and advice provided by Allplastics". He added "Polycarbonate allowed us to install the project without the use of cranes and the fact that polycarbonate is hail and UV resistant was an added bonus". He continued "we did not want the lines that hollow polycarbonate has, thus the solid clear polycarbonate was a good option".

In the past, acrylic was often chosen for plastic glazing applications because of its inherent resistance to yellowing over time. But, compared to polycarbonate, the relative brittleness of acrylic made its impact strength insufficient for demanding, vandal resistant applications. Polycarbonate is an exceptionally tough material which is 250 times the strength of standard glass. The sheets are suited for outdoor applications where outstanding weatherability and long life expectancy are required with a temperature from -40C° to 130C°.
