Braille Background

Traditionally, braille is embossed on paper of heavier stock than printer paper, and a book or magazine in braille is much larger than its print counterpart.

Braille is a representation of the alphabet, numbers, punctuation marks, and symbols made from "cells" of dots.

There are 6-8 possible dots in a cell, and one cell makes a single letter, number, or punctuation mark.

Trends in Braille Technology

Braille technology has been in the electronic world for many years.

Braille is far more than dots on paper! Many computer or tablet users who have acquired vision loss may not even be aware of the value or use of braille in the technology we use every day- computers, tablets, smartphones, kindles etc.

Many of these devices can connect to braille displays, so that text on the screen can be read as tactile characters on a display, read by touch.

Hillmont Braille Signs is one of the most successful and innovative manufacturers of Braille in Australia and have been manufacturing and supplying Braille / tactile and general signage solutions throughout Australia for over 20 years from our Northwest Sydney location (now based at Castle Hill).

High profile projects include the award-winning wayfinding system at the University of Sydney, many of the facilities for the Sydney 2000 Olympics as well as the Epping to Chatswood railway, Rural Railways and Braille signs inside the new Oscar railway carriages.

We have a large range of standard U.V. stable acrylic signage in stock as well as being able to manufacture non-standard colours, materials and designs to your specifications. They are stand-alone signs able to be mounted directly to any flat surface without the need for a backing plate.

Materials include acrylic, brass, aluminium and stainless steel. Braille, symbols and text are all adhered to the sign to ensure durability and guard against tampering.

Hillmont Signs uses Grade 1 U.E.B. (Unified English Braille) which is the current standard for Braille in Australia with all of our designs meeting or exceeding the requirements of D3.6 of the Building Code of Australia and AS1428.1 of the Australian Standards. We are also able to advise you on the compliance of your designs.

All of our Premium and Custom signs are locally manufactured at our Castle Hill, NSW factory in Australia.

All of our acrylic signs are made from UV stable high impact acrylic suitable for internal and external use as well as the aluminium, stainless steel and brass signs. Please bear in mind that brass will eventually tarnish and require ongoing maintenance.

The process not only involves engraving but drilling and placing epoxy dots in the holes to produce the most tactile Braille signage available.

These signs are manufactured to exceed Australian and New Zealand standards and are a lot more durable than standard engraved signage.
