Karndean Designflooring and Slip Resistance in Flooring

Slip resistance in flooring is an important technical aspect in commercial interiors as it is increasingly being incorporated into building regulations and there is client expectation that surfaces will provide adequate slip resistance.

The AS/NZS 4586 standard provides four means of classifying the slip resistance of surface materials (oil wet ramp, wet pendulum, dry floor friction and we/barefoot ramp). Flooring in many businesses and industrial applications is generally specified in accordance with the oil-wet ramp and wet pendulum test.

Oil wet ramp testing is where contamination from oil or other greasy substances is likely to be an issue. An R9 rated floor is more than adequate for commercial applications where no potential spillage or ramp access is required. For areas that are potentially wet, a minimum R10 floor is required.

Karndean Designflooring's Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) performs exceptionally well in dry and damp conditions and all products have achieved either an R9, R10 or R11 classification - as explained below.

Karndean LVT performs exceptionally well in potentially wet conditions. Wet pendulum testing determines the slip resistance in situ, where there is a likelihood of the surface being contaminated with any liquid by rain, accidental spillage or in doorways. Karndean products perform well and have achieve good results for wet pendulum testing.
