A key component in the expansion joint cover plate system is the centering bar made up of a composite material, which has wear-resistant spheres moulded at both ends that act as the lubrication-free bearings. The spheres couple the three extrusions together, and move in response to heat-induced changes and seismic activity. This minimises deterioration on the aluminium and brass tracks.
