Carpet Underlay Insulation: Control the Noise with Bellis Australia

Bellis Australia is an official supplier of Silentstep carpet underlay insulation by Pyrotek, US-based global leaders in technical solutions. Pyrotek has provided glass, acoustic insulation, and other advanced materials for more than 60 years, servicing over 35 countries today. Similarly, Bellis has been in service to the construction and engineering industries for nearly five decades. The shared longevity between Bellis and Pyrotek builds trust in the sophisticated features and benefits of Silentstep.
Carpet underlay insulation is a sought-after component of a comprehensive insulation system. While the famed Foamglas range from Bellis provides optimum thermal insulation, Silentstep delivers high-performance acoustic insulation for a twofold solution to achieve a pleasant indoor ambience.
Acoustic insulation has grown in demand over the last decade, along with the rise of high-density living and lightweight construction. Residential and commercial multi-storey buildings are prone to noise issues brought about by foot traffic and other activities on lightweight or poorly constructed flooring systems. Silentstep is designed to alleviate this concern straight from the source.
Silentstep is an innovative carpet underlay insulation laminate, comprised of four layers:
- A reinforcing layer provides the dual functionality of slip-resistance to prevent carpet rippling and strength for the barrier to ensure long-lasting stability.
- A noise barrier significantly reduces noise caused by the limp and heavy profile of the product.
- A foam layer allows the noise barrier to perform independently through isolation from the floor structure.
- A slip layer streamlines the fitting process while strengthening the foam layer.

The high mass and limp nature of Silentstep minimises the transfer of airborne noise caused by the human voice, audio equipment, radio, television, and home entertainment systems. On the other hand, impact noise due to footfalls, dropped objects, slammed doors and shuffled furniture, is diminished by the damping of the noise barrier, and the cushioning effect of the acoustic foam. The sophisticated multi-layer construction of Silentstep results in a noticeable reduction of noise from the floor above into the room directly below.
Silentstep is installed similarly to conventional underlay, offering excellent compatibility with all types of carpet, including nylon, polyester and wool. The final manufactured thickness of the carpet underlay insulation also guarantees easy laying as with conventional underlay.
Here are the general guidelines on the installation of Silentstep carpet underlay insulation:
- A standard domestic carpet gripper must be used unless otherwise directed.
- The foam side of Silentstep must be laid onto the floor surface.
- The edges of the carpet underlay insulation must be butted together, joining each sheet with high-quality underlay tape.
- Bonding and stapling must be avoided during fitting, as they reduce the acoustic performance of the carpet underlay insulation. Silentstep has sufficient internal weight to remain in position.
- Silentstep will be cut in as per standard underlay installation.
- The carpet must be firmly attached to the leading gripper pins.
- The carpet must be bolstered between the skirting board and the far side gripper edge.
