Architectural Expansion Joints for Indooroopilly Shopping Centre from Unison Joints

Building better and smarter structures starts with architectural expansion joints by Unison Joints. Also known as movement joints, architectural expansion joints are designed to cover gaps which provide structural relief from movement caused by multiple factors, including seismic activity, thermal changes, wind velocity, unequal concrete settling, concrete creep and shrinkage. The state-of-the-art solutions transition the unsightly gaps to provide a trafficable surface for both vehicles and pedestrians, whilst providing a barrier to ingress of water, fire or other elements.
Unison Joints has provided architectural expansion joints for hospitals, museums, stadia, airport terminals, multi-deck carparks, and other major infrastructure developments across Australia, and all the way to the Middle East. Some of the Queensland-based company's highest-profile projects include the revamped International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney, The New Perth Stadium, and Al Wahda Mall in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Anchored by two decades of expertise, Unison Joints yields results held to a gold standard of quality, delivered with no less than world-class service.
Spotlight: Indooroopilly Shopping Centre
Unison Joints was enlisted to design, supply and install cover plate expansion joint systems for the redevelopment of Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, the biggest shopping centre in the western suburbs of Brisbane. Under main contractor Brookfield Multiplex, Unison Joints collaborated with leading PDT architects to meet the requirements of Eureka, the client for the project.

Here is the rundown of Unison Joints products used for the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre redevelopment:

1. Flexo - Flexo (Fx) are floor and floorwall architectural expansion joints fabricated from robust anodised aluminium and stainless steel. Approximately 1900m of Fx was installed to Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. Built for high capacity, the cover plate systems are adaptable to both indoor and outdoor applications. With Class X slip resistance, Fx is trolley-safe in accordance with AS 4586-2013.

2. Pyrotx - Designed for high movement capacity, Pyrotx (Py) is a premier range of Intumescent firesealing systems. Unison Joints installed approximately 2500m of Py I for the project. The fireseals for architectural expansion joints provide excellent facility to structural, thermal and seismic movements. With fire ratings of 2 and 4 hours, PyI is certified to AS 1530.4-2014, AS 4072.1-2014, and NZS/BS 476.20 PyI can easily be used in conjunction with most coverplate and waterseal systems by Unison Joints.

3. Aquo - Aquo (AqP) is a specialised waterseal system, highly recommended for use in carparks and stadiums. Approximately 2600m of Aq P was used for the parking area of Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. The waterseals deliver exceptional waterproofing performance under high movement range. Employed in conjunction with Unison's DzFT or ByN, AqP offers safe trafficability for pedestrians, and even heavy vehicle loads.
After two years, the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre redevelopment was completed in 2014. The expansion joint project of Unison Joints has been well-received by the six major tenancies involved, namely Target, Kmart, Coles, Woolworths, David Jones, and the only Myer store in the region. After project completion the Unison carpark product (DzFT/AqP) performed so well that Centre Management refurbished existing carpark expansion joints with 1000 metres of that same Unison expansion joint system. And now in 2017 an extension to the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre carpark is having the mighty, watertight AqP seal installed.
