Expansion Joint Covers: Retail Projects by Unison Joints

Expansion joint cover systems are the flagship product by Unison Joints. The Queensland-based company continues to expand their portfolio with nearly two decades of service to the building and construction industry in Australia and around the globe. Dedicated to a gold standard of quality, Unison Joints has been trusted for a wide variety of leading building construction developments, whether for commercial, retail or residential use.
Spotlight: Gasworks Newstead
Gasworks Newstead is an upscale commercial, retail and residential precinct, under development in Newstead, Brisbane. Upon completion, Gasworks will be comprised of seven buildings totalling to 103,500m2 of commercial space, 17,000m2 of retail units, and around 750 residential apartments. For the first stage of the development, Unison Joints designed, supplied and installed movement joint systems, including expansion joint covers.
Expansion joint covers come in a broad range from the Unison Joints catalogue to suit various requirements of the project. Since Gasworks Newstead is a large-scale mixed-use development, Unison Joints provided Flexo range of expansion joint covers, along with Aquo waterseals and Pyro fireseals.
Flexo Cover Plate Systems
Flexo (Fx) include floor and floorwall architectural expansion joints. Made of aluminium and stainless steel, Fx is designed to be fitted in facilities with pedestrian, trolley traffic, and other load variations. Unison Joints installed approximately 190m of FxC to Gasworks Newstead. In accordance with AS 4586-2013, Fx can be optioned to have a Class V slip resistance for the safe trafficability of pedestrians and service equipment.

Fx currently offers five types of expansion joint covers, including:

1. Fx C - Fx C is the best-selling floor cover plate system for use in retail centres, airport terminals and apartment developments, to name a few. Fx C is designed to accommodate structural movement from all directions. Compatible with most floor finishes, Fx C comes supplied with composite c-bars for longevity and zero corrosion factor.

2. Fx CA - Fx CA also incorporates a composite centre bar technology into the design. This floor joint system can be easily butt-joined with FxC at changes in the floor finish. Upon application, Fx CA exhibits a cleaner, more discreet profile to maintain high aesthetic value. The system is normally used in carpeted areas where visual impact is important.

3. Fx CH - Also borrowing from the Fx C design, Fx CH is built for heavy-duty applications. The architectural floor cover plate system provides high capacity to heavy rolling traffic of pedestrians and service equipment. This system is generally used in concourse areas such as airport terminals, convention centres and stadia.

4. Fx CT - Fx CT is the specialised range for compatibility with terrazzo, marble, granite, pavers, and other stone tiles and deep floor finishes. Generally used in shopping malls and landscaped areas such as podiums. FxCT also has composite cbar technology, so external use is not an issue.

5. Fx D - Fx D caters to applications where substrate rebating must be kept to minimum. The system has a very low profile to ensure that reinforcement steel is not exposed during refurbishment operations. It can be used for new-to-old works, department-store and supermarket refurbishments.
All Fx cover plates are available in stainless steel, natural-anodised aluminium, and beadblasted coverplates for high slip-resistance.
