DDA Compliant HEELPROOF Grates from EJ![]() HEELPROOF™ grates by EJ installed at the busy South Brisbane Rail Station.
No Business Wants to be Known as a Heel Just for the experience, hire a wheel chair and try rolling it through some of the established public spaces around the country. There is an appalling lack of consideration for those who are permanently wheel-chair bound. Slippery trench grates with wide gaps that wheels can easily jam in create mobility and even tip and fall issues. Apart from creating further injury, pain and suffering for the victim, resulting litigation and bad publicity is something no public authority would want to have to deal with. It's why the Disability Discrimination Act has very clear guidelines for manufacturers and marketers of trench grates. These applications must comply with stringent standards relating to the apertures of the gratings and the anti-slip properties they employ. An excellent example of compliant grates is the HEELPROOF™ series by EJ. These have been built tough in either ductile iron, forged with anti-slip lugs and with grate spacings that well exceed the DDA requirements or in galvanised mild steel with custom coloured non-slip coatings. These are the grates that architects and engineers Asia-Pacific wide are specifying for much of their public space work.
