Upon seeing covers that required some attention in a well-travelled area of the Eaton's Hill Hotel, EJ quickly volunteered to assist in repairs and demonstrate proper maintenance practices. The hazardous environment concealed by the covers, combined with years of low maintenance, had caused a severe build-up of rust and grime in the access frame. The build-up had forced the covers to rise about 10mm out of their frames, forming potential trip hazards.

The EJ team, keen to support their local business partners, promptly arrived on-site to assist in the restoration and showcase the importance of regular maintenance.

Carefully opening the covers, the EJ team set about removing the grime from both the frames and lids with a steel scraper, followed by a more meticulous clean with an electric angle grinder and brush. Finally satisfied with the condition of both surfaces, the EJ team applied a coating of sealing grease and returned the covers to their frames.

Although the covers now lay at a significantly lower point than before, The EJ team realized that the reason the lids sat so high out of their frame was an inadvertent ground movement of the concrete surround. One possible solution to this problem was to ship the lids back to the EJ factory and grind the covers back to be able to fit in the frames. However, not wanting to leave a potential hazard for bystanders or delay the hotel management, the EJ team elected to provide four brand new solid top covers instead, providing an immediate and certain solution to the problem.
