Roof Expansion Joints and Building Movement Joints by Unison Joints

Safety and durability are an important consideration in today's building and construction industry. With that being said, the development of expansion joints has safeguarded buildings against structural movements that are caused by a variety of factors. Subsidence, heave, bulging walls, bouncy floors, unappealing cracks, contractions and expansions are just some of the effects of structural movement. These are the result of thermal changes, seismic movement and water infiltration into building structures.
To minimise such effects, expansion joints are incorporated in strategic locations throughout the building. These locations include foundations, concrete slabs, walls, frameworks, columns, floors and roofs. Roof expansion joints are generally a flexible closure designed to reduce the effects of building movement or stress on a roof system. Major specifiers like civil engineers and architects will require roof expansion joints to be parallel with the building's structural movement joints, or in areas where significant movement is likely to occur.
The areas where roof expansion joints must be considered to be installed in are the following:
- Where the structural or building movement joints are provided
- Where the changes in deck types and direction occurs
- For building designs with unique shapes or extensions
- Areas where differential movement between vertical walls and roof deck can occur
- Isolated areas where excessive vibration may happen
- Buildings where significant building movement might transpire due to thermal conditions, soil condition, high winds or seismic activity

Unison Joints design, produce and supply a wide range of building movement and roof expansion joint systems to suit all types of applications. For maximum safety and quality, Unison Joints pre-assembled joint and fire sealing systems are manufactured in compliance with the Building Code of Australia requirements such as: AS 1530.4, AS 4072.1, BS 476.20, AS 4586, AS1428.1, and BCA C3.16.
SeiMax R Seismic Joints from Unison Joints
SeiMax R is a seismic joint and cover plate system. Available in roof-to-roof and roof-to-wall design application, SeiMax R accommodates multi-directional movement which is ideal to use against movements caused by seismic activity.
Unison Joints' roof expansion joint consists of a ridge-cap shaped aluminium cover with cbar type coupling. SeiMax R is made from anodised aluminium, which offers a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant metal surface. Cover plates can be powder coated to desirable colours in order to match the surrounding roof finishes. SeiMax R comes with a secondary waterproof seal and drainage spigots are available as an accessory item.
Vertos S Thermoplastic Seal Expansion Joints for Wall Applications
Vertos S is a wall to wall building expansion joint system from Unison Joints. Vertos S is made up of extruded aluminium retainers combined with extruded thermoplastic cover which can be used in both interior and exterior applications. An additional PVC secondary seal is used for outdoor use.
The water-resistant thermoplastic cover is available in black, grey, beige and other colour options to match surrounding walls. Vertos S can be used on a wall or corner joint installation system. It can tolerate a six way, multi-directional movement preventing damage to the surrounding substrate.
Unison Joints building movement and roof expansion joints are delivered to clients pre-assembled - saving on installation time.
