Featured Artists - October Incorporating non-traditional media and processes in her work, Katherine seeks to distil classical interpretations of the beauty of the natural world in an organic, abstract space. She often begins the act of mark-making by subjecting the surfaces of her large timber panels to the transformative power of the flame; using fire itself as a drawing medium.
Benjamin's work stems from a fascination with fluid, dynamic motion, whether witnessed in nature, human motion, or computer-aided visualizations in the sciences. Plotting of the behavior of pendulums, imagery of surfaces being drawn into 'fields of attraction', strange attractor point clouds and fluid dynamics are all major influences on Benjamin's sculptural work.
Paris-born, Michel Canetti is an artist and leading advertising illustrator working for publications including Elle, Vogue, and Le Figaro - now painting from Melbourne. Michel's subject matter is the female form, using sweeping lines and confident brushstrokes similar to those found in calligraphy. The focus is most often a female face, conveyed with loose gestures that hint at moments of intimacy and passion. With his painterly approach, he manages to be both versatile and immediately recognisable.
His femmes have self-esteem in bucket loads. Their self-contained serenity shows a disregard for modern society's ideals of all things thin and angular. Well-rounded female statues have been around since the ancient prehistoric sculpture of earth woman deities. "I just love curves, not sharp angles," says Zygmunt, twice winner of the prestigious Shillam Prize for sculpture.
With a loaded palette knife of impasto, Hicks paints tiered colour bands of sunset and breeze beyond naked trees. Indigenous references to the artist's heritage are subtly infused into texture and meaning; Mottled backgrounds and cloaked layers insinuate a narrative beyond the immediate visual.
