During the late 1970's, the Indonesian Government decided to stabilise the salt industry there. Previously, salt prices and availability had fluctuated wildly between wet and dry seasons, as most salt was produced on the large island of Madura, in the Indonesian archipelago.

The Government decided that by buying up all the raw salt that was produced in the dry season and storing it properly in bulk warehouses, it could release proper amounts during the wet season, keeping prices at affordable levels all year long.

The success of this idea was predicated on the ability to store large amounts of raw salt safely, during the wet seasons for later distribution.

Unfortunately, the early concrete warehouse floors were destroyed within one year of loading the warehouses. Chloride attack, of a ferocious nature as you can imagine in a bulk raw salt store, quickly corroded both the reinforcing steel and the concrete itself by salt spalling. Having to re-construct bulk warehouse floors every year was detracting savagely from the economics of the original plan.

In 1981, an engineering consultant from Surabaya was engaged to design several new bulk raw salt storage warehouses. He specified that Cementaid Everdure Caltite Hydrophobic Pore-blocking Ingredient (HPI) be incorporated in all concrete floors, walls and columns of the warehouses, to prevent salt attack and destruction.

In July 2005, 24 years later, these Caltite Salt Storage Floors were inspected.

The floors are in excellent, corrosion-free condition, as are the walls and columns that were constructed with Caltite concrete.

There is some evidence to suggest that the full dose of the CALTITE ingredient may not have been employed (estimated @ approx. 75% dose), nevertheless, the condition of the Caltite floors is very good, with no evidence of corrosion / spalling and only minor surface wear in areas.

Compared to the very limited effective life of the initial floors without "Caltite" (approx. 12 - 18 months), the use of Caltite has provided approximately 24 times longer maintenance-free service life so far.

As to our clients, the Indonesian Govt. they are delighted to have saved the cost of bulk raw salt storage 24 times over!
