Sustainability for a Residential Home

If you think sustainability and urban living are a contradiction in terms, think again. A few years ago, Chris Knierim of Designer Constructions decided to go about designing and building his own sustainable building in Forest Lodge, Sydney.

The building was constructed on a very small plot of land next to Chris' home and it uses every square inch of the property to reduce the energy consumption of the building. In a bid to make use of all the available space, Chris installed roof solar panels that heat underground storage cells, providing heating and hot water for the home.

Underground water storage tanks collect rainwater, which is then used to irrigate the greenwalls and make use of all the space in the courtyard garden.

The building is topped with a greenroof for insulation, which was created using Elmich VersiDrain 25P. The VersiDrain cell is located underneath the greenroof build up, acting as both reservoir and drainage layer with the water stored in the cells supporting plants between irrigation. It was, naturally, the most effective greenroof drainage cell Chris could find.

The home featured on Grand Designs on the Lifestyle Channel after it was built.
