More than a name change from the former Short Term Accommodation model, the new framework redefines eligibility, limits what funding can cover, and tightens reporting expectations for providers.

STR now focuses on giving informal supports, families and carers, a break from daily responsibilities rather than on participant skill-building. Funding applies only to essential accommodation and direct support, excluding activities, transport, or personal expenses. These stricter rules make transparency, documentation, and compliance more critical than ever for NDIS providers.
