Motorised Solar Control for Curtin University's Legacy Living Lab by Verosol Curtin University's Legacy Living Lab (L3) demonstrates sustainable construction in practice, built to showcase circular-economy principles with an impressively low five tonnes of CO2 emissions generated during construction. As the building transitioned into an active research and collaboration space, however, excess heat and glare created a challenging internal environment. To resolve this, L3 installed seven Ambience Motorised Roller Blinds featuring 203 SilverScreen Performance fabric in Dark Grey. The metallised fabric provides exceptional solar control, reducing heat gain while maintaining outward visibility- critical for a workspace dedicated to environmental innovation. Although ongoing research will quantify project-specific outcomes, Verosol's previous studies show SilverScreen Performance fabrics typically deliver up to 75% heat-gain reduction, annual energy savings of 11,374 kWh, and approximately $785 in cost savings per year. With a low 4% total light transmission, the blinds significantly improve visual comfort without compromising natural daylight or external views. The solution aligns seamlessly with L3's sustainability goals, providing measurable thermal performance and long-term energy efficiency for education and research environments.
