Thermal Comfort with the Thermomass Building Insulation System

thermally insulated house

Thermal mass is the ability of a material to absorb heat energy. A large amount of heat energy is required to change the temperature of high density materials like concrete. They are therefore said to have high thermal mass. Lightweight materials such as timber have low thermal mass. Appropriate use of thermal mass throughout your building can make a big difference to comfort and heating and cooling bills.

Thermal mass is not a substitute for insulation. Thermal mass stores and re-radiates heat. Insulation stops heat flowing into or out of the building. A high thermal mass material is not generally a good thermal insulator.

Reducing heat loss is the main priority for cool, temperate and alpine areas such as Melbourne, Hobart, Thredbo and Mt Gambier. Reducing heat gain is the critical priority for high humidity and hot dry areas such as Darwin, Cairns, Broome and Townsville. Reducing heat loss and heat gain are equally important for the warm to mild temperate and warm humid areas such as Alice Springs, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane.

Insulating concrete walls with The Thermomass Building Insulation System will eliminate the transfer of heat energy in every climate and achieve:

  • a more comfortable environment,
  • reduced energy for indoor comfort,
  • money saved; and,
  • reduction of greenhouse gas emissions!
