Waterco's new Ezysoft water softener is good for health, home and the environment - Soft water saves time and money

As homeowners update to energy efficient appliances that reduce utility costs and reduce carbon emissions, greater attention is turning to the quality of water that comes from their taps. It's with this in mind that Waterco, which manufactures a diverse range of water treatment products, has developed the new Ezysoft water softener.

Hard water is defined as any water supply containing excess minerals or metals, such as calcium and iron. While this is generally safe to use, it can cause a myriad of problems related to reduced cleaning efficiency, increased energy costs, and appliance use. Water softeners remove the mineral concentrations in hard water and offer several benefits to homeowners.

"Water softeners are a must in areas with traditionally high calcium and magnesium hardness water," says Victor Quijada, Waterco's water treatment product manager. "For example, in Mount Gambier, South Australia's second most populous town, water is supplied from the Blue Lake and contains a hardness of 250 ppm. Conversely, water that is considered soft contains 0-60ppm."

Hard water has a number of adverse effects, including:

The formation of lime scaling in pipes, water heaters, boilers and air conditioning systems that cause inefficiency and can lead to permanent damage
Lowering heat transmission and often causing premature heater failure due to overheating of the metal
Increasing soap consumption, wasting from 50% to 90% of the soap used, depending on the amount of hardness. It also causes the formation of soap curd, which adheres to cloth fibres, hair, glassware and dishes. Soap curd causes poor results in laundering and may hold pathogenic bacteria

Ezysoft's semi-automatic design results in the simplest and most economic method of removing calcium hardness from water. The device is usually installed before a water heater and it comes with a bypass installed, which enables the unit to be 'isolated' for maintenance purposes.

"Ezysoft has a number of benefits," Quijada explains. "Not only is it easy to use, but it's energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The Ezysoft does not require electricity, and the energy saving features means reduced energy consumption in water heating systems and appliances which means you will lower energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions."

The minerals found in hard water can build up on the insides of appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and water heaters, reducing their working life and decreasing efficiency. Ezysoft not only extends their lifespan but also benefits the environment by reducing waste and conserving the raw materials and energy used in manufacturing.

Faster water heating
Hot water heaters can heat softened water more quickly than hard water, improving efficiency by roughly 22 per cent for electric water heaters and 29 per cent for gas-powered units. Improving efficiency with Ezysoft reduces energy consumption, resulting in significantly lower energy bills.

Cleaner plumbing system
Hard water leaves scaly deposits in plumbing fixtures and pipes, which can corrode and shorten the life of your home's plumbing system as they build up over time. Reducing mineral deposits with Ezysoft helps eliminate the adverse effects of clogs and corrosion, extending the life of the plumbing system and helping appliances and equipment operate more effectively.

Discharges to the environment are minimal - the regeneration is performance using a low ratio salt/resin when compare with the standard resins. The quantity of salt used in Ezysoft per regeneration is up to 50% less than the standard water softener without sacrificing any capacity.
