Water smart Ecoskim - the Australian invention that dramatically reduces the need to top-up swimming pools during dry spells and droughts - is officially distributed by Waterco Ltd (ASX: WAT).

Group marketing director Bryan Goh says the savvy skimmer box is a valuable piece of pool equipment that conserves precious water while also reducing pool maintenance.

Ecoskim is connected by a flexible hose directly into the suction side of the pool's filtration system. As it is a floating device, it self-levels and continues to operate regardless of the water level of the swimming pool down to 350mm below coping (or top edge). As the pool water is drawn through the device, the floating component finds a differential between the pool's and Ecoskim water levels thus creating a weir effect that skims floating debris from the surface.

"Compared with a standard skimmer box, it means that fewer water top-ups are required due to the device's floating design and continued operation," Goh explains.

"Skimmer boxes, in their current format, have been around for about 30-40 years, and the overall concept of how they operate has remained unchanged," says Mark Davies, who invented Ecoskim with Paul De Groot. "Whilst over the last decade our attitudes to water usage and sustainability have changed dramatically, skimmer boxes have not evolved to a degree needed to cater for these evolving needs."

In addition to its water saving credentials, Ecoskim also reduces manual pool maintenance; "Having a much bigger water level window and larger leaf basket means a pool can go months without requiring top-ups and it no longer needs constant vigilance to keep the pump from running dry," he explains.
