Southwell builds Goods Hoists with walls and a roof on the platform to protect goods.

The benefits of having walls and a roof on the hoist platform.

For the past four years, Southwell have been building Goods Hoists with walls and a roof on the platform. This has greatly reduced the amount of damage to customers goods, the roof of the facility and the hoist.

Previously Workcover authorities would not allow us to offer these enclosed platforms as it was deemed to be only for lifts. Therefore the hoist was just a moving platform within a fixed clad structure.

Despite signage and operator training, people would continue to lean their goods against the fixed walls. The slightest crevice was enough to catch the goods and then the rising platform would cause the damage.

With the walled platforms, customers are free to lean their goods against the platform walls without fear of damage.

This is also why it may be better to design your facility with the hoist having doors on the same side as we can then provide a 3 sided platform. With doors on the opposite sides, there is always a risk that the goods could fall against the back wall and catch when rising. Whilst we understand certain layouts can only operate this way, doors on the same side does reduce the risk.

Roofing on the platform is a benefit ensuring customers will not put over height goods in the hoist which may otherwise put a hole in the roof of your facility.

We have also managed to offer these units at the same cost as the traditional style by not cladding walls of the hoist structure on the sides where there are platform walls. The unclad sides can then be clad on site by the unit builder, thereby creating that built in look.

We are looking at ways to fit walls and a roof to existing Goods Hoists. There would be a slight loss of platform area and capacity, but this would be minor when compared to the benefits.
