Convicts Plaque - Great North Road

The Old Great North Road is regarded as a major engineering contribution to Australia's early colonial settlement. It served the purpose of connecting Sydney to the rapidly developing farmlands of the Hunter Valley. Extending north from Sydney to the Hunter Valley, the Convict Trail follows the route of the 240 km Great North Road, built between 1826 and 1836. Most of this road continues to be used today, offering an alternative, slower paced scenic route between Sydney and the Hunter, where one can explore the brilliant engineering works created by hundreds of convicts - many working in leg-irons.

Relics such as stone retaining walls, wharves, culverts, bridges and buttresses can still be seen along the entire length of the Great North Road - in Sydney suburbs like Epping and Gladesville, at Wisemans Ferry or Wollombi, Bucketty or Broke, or when walking in Dharug and Yengo National Parks (*Internet Source).

Memorialisation is the last but very important stage of the grieving process. Nowadays with such a large percentage of cremations, it is often over looked and its significance missed.

Memorialisation adds a sense of permanence to a loved one's life ensuring that the memories are kept forever providing peace of mind for those who want to remember. Memories are precious and at the time of bereavement very important for immediate family and friends, however, they are often lost for future generations. A memorial stands for all to see and visit thus sharing those precious memories with future generations of relatives and friends. Memorials are an important part of our community history. Cemeteries are a wealth of information on the role of families and people in their communities. Genealogists, historians and interested public use cemeteries to record information and derive a real insight into the life and times of our past.
