Signage for Councils from Architectural Signs Sydney

Outdoor signage that is visible from a road, footpath or any other public place is regulated by Council in order to prevent visual clutter and ensure public safety.

Depending on the type of sign and its location in the City, a sign may be classified as Permitted (does not require a license), Licensable (you must apply for a license) or Prohibited (the sign is not allowed) under the Advertisements Subordinate Local Law.

If the property or building on which the sign is to be placed is a heritage site, you must submit an application even if the sign type is classified as Permitted.

The main purpose of regulating advertising signs is to ensure they are constructed and maintained to ensure public safety and that they complement the surrounding environment. Advertising signs may be temporary, mobile or permanent.

The approval also considers any structure forming part of the sign and its location on the building/property on which it is to be erected.

The benefits of consistent, professional and durable signage throughout regions include;

  • Promotion of the Region
  • Limiting the number of non-Council signs
  • Enhancing visitors' ability to navigate the region using directional signage to genuine tourist destinations, sporting facilities, conference and education facilities and accommodation providers, signage in information bays, tourist trail signage inside and outside of town boundaries, and signage to emergency/health facilities.
  • Maintaining consistency to the extent practical with State informational and directional signage design and regulations. (Internet Source*)
