Waterco Bolsters Sustainability Credentials with Industry Certification

Sydney, Australia, April 20, 2020 - Waterco (ASX:WAT) has bolstered its sustainability credentials with the water treatment manufacturing company's ninth product innovation receiving Climate Care Certified accreditation. Waterco's Sweep Elbow improves a swimming pool's hydraulic efficiency, particularly when used in conjunction with a variable speed pump.

Waterco Domestic Water Care Product Manager, George Flory says research indicates that PVC sweep elbows show a marked difference in water flow and head loss when compared with traditional 90° elbows.

"Using sweep elbows reduces the overall system head loss and improve the pool's hydraulic efficiency," he explains. "This enables a multispeed or variable speed pump to operate at a lower speed without sacrificing flow rate through the pool's filtration circuit or reducing the pool's turnover rate."

Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Australia COO, Spiros Dassakis says designing the filtration plumbing of a pool to minimise the pressure losses should take into account keeping the pipe lengths as short as possible (where possible), using 50mm or larger diameter piping and fitting sweep elbows instead of 90-degree bends.

"Improving hydraulic efficiency enables a multispeed or variable speed pump to operate at a lower speed without sacrificing flow rate through the pool's filtration circuit or reducing the pool's turnover rate," he explains.

The annual energy savings on a per pool basis simply by using efficient plumbing systems with sweep elbows alone could account for 31kWh per year savings or 1.2 per cent in energy savings.

"Further advantages of using sweep elbows is reducing maintenance issues such as leaking and broken pipes as pipes last longer at lower velocities," says Dassakis. "Efficient pipe fittings and appropriate pipe diameters contribute to decreased head, which allows for a smaller pump size and the associated environmental benefits."
