Treating Timber in Wet Areas from Whittle Waxes

timber in bathroom

Whittle Waxes has the perfect solution for treating timber in wet areas. Our Hardwax Oil coatings are water repellent, not only water resistant like many other coatings. They are not only lustrous, but also slip resistant, durable and non-toxic. These finishes can be safely specified for all residential / commercial projects.

There are many benefits of our Hardwaxes Oils in wet areas such as bathrooms, as the product does have not a skin building process. This allows the timber to breathe, therefore climatic changes are accommodated. A skin is susceptible to cracking which then allowing water to penetrate and discolour the timber. The likeliness of this happening to timber with a penetrative Hardwax oil finish is dramatically reduced.

Skeptical? Here's what carpenter, builder, tinkerer and inventor Oliver Maclatchy from Wood Melbourne has to say.

"I am the designer and maker at Wood Melbourne, where I make timber bathroom furnishings, such as baths, spouts and shower heads. There was and still is a real impression that timber doesn't work in the bathroom. I love timber, and I love using it everywhere that I can when I build, so I was determined to find a way to make timber in bathrooms work. This is where I discovered Whittles waxes. I had tried everything from oils to epoxies and nothing did what I wanted it to do; the oils and epoxies changed the colour and look of the timber and didn't provide the water protection that I was after. Not only does Whittles' Treatex do everything I want it to, it's also very user and environmentally friendly. I use it on my bath spouts, taps and showerheads and am really confident that I can rely on it. I love the way it seals and protects but still leaves the timber looking naturally beautiful without changing colour or yellowing. I'm a big fan!" - Oliver MacLatchy

Oliver likes to be alone with his timber sometimes to conduct late night experiments and to tinker with reclaimed and recycled timber. During one of these sessions in his workshop in 2013, Oliver invented timber spouts, the likes of which have never been seen before.

Wood Melbourne, much like the material, has grown naturally since that famous night. Wood timber spouts provide a warm, sustainable and natural alternative to traditional spouts. Each individual Wood timber spout is designed and made by hand in Oliver's workshop in Melbourne.

The raw timber used for each spout is reclaimed timber that goes through a 12 step process by hand including denailing, sanding and applying Treatex Hardwax Oil from Whittle Waxes. This process makes sure each finished timber spout is unique in aesthetic but uniform in levels of exceptional craftsmanship and quality.

Hardwax Oils offer a greater degree of protection from water damage to timber than a Moisture Cured Polyurethane, or a water based polyurethane. Furthermore skin building finishes lead to endless aggressive sanding and recoating, unlike Hardwax oils that can be spot repaired and easily recoated by simply lightly sanding the timber and applying another coat. Because they are non-toxic this can easily be done without having to move out of the house because of negative health effects cause by many other types of coatings.

It also meets the Australian Standards for slip resistance. Although Hardwax Oils are not recommended for external timber, they provide the perfect solution for a broad range of applications for all timber species.
