It is mandatory that all toilets and other amenities for public use have braille tactile signs.

For the visually impaired The Building Code of Australia (BCA) (Clause D3.6) requires that Braille and Tactile signage be displayed on ALL sanitary facilities (other than private residences) Braille and Tactile signage is also required to indicate accessible routes, such as ramps/ lifts for persons in wheelchairs.

The requirements for the identification of sanitary facilities are as follows:

(a) Unisex accessible sanitary facilities shall be identified with -
(i) the international symbol of access; and
(ii) symbols indicating use by both males and females, in accordance with Clause 14.
(b) Showers and combined facilities shall be identified with the international symbol of access in accordance with Clause 14.
(c) Sanitary facilities suitable for people with ambulant disabilities shall not be identified with the international symbol for access.
(d) All symbols and lettering shall be raised tactile.
