Derric Roof has had a life-long love of swimming. The Tucson, Arizona resident swam competitively from the age of eight, and received his Varsity letter for the sport in his freshman year. Even when his sporting days were over, the father of three adult sons continued to swim. The hot dry climate of the U.S.' south-west enabled Derric to swim almost every day in warm weather, and he treasured the time he spent in his backyard pool.
Another great benefit of the pool was the joy it brought to a very ill little girl. Derric and his wife, Deb, foster infant girls, and one child, Willow, had the rare genetic disease Tay Sachs. In her short life, Willow enjoyed being in the water with her foster father.
About five years ago, Derric discovered he had developed an allergic reaction to the chlorine and set about finding a solution.
"For the past five years, if I got in a pool that was out of balance or over chlorinated, I would break out into a substantial rash," he said. "I had to keep the chemicals so low that I was always fighting algae and other issues. It was never to the point that I wanted to give up swimming, but at times I did think about it. "
Willow joined the family when she was three weeks old. Her diagnosis with Tay Sachs disease came with many side effects.
"Willow was hypersensitive to many things, and chlorine was one of them," Derric said.

Finding a solution
Derric undertook significant research but did not find a solution he felt would work. In his research, he looked at hydrogen peroxide.
"Approximately six years ago I was telling a friend of mine that I had been doing some research on hydrogen peroxide and pools and spas," Derric said. "He said there was nothing in the United States that worked well."
He told his friend to keep him in mind if such a system became available in the U.S.
"He later told me that Waterco was looking for a case study here in Tucson. They came out and I qualified for the [Hydroxypure] system."
Derric had specific needs: In addition to having chlorine free water, he also required a system that would interface with the existing home solar generating system and that would not need a lot of maintenance.
Derric's pool was retrofitted with a holistic solution: The chlorine-free Hydroxypure system, in addition to a Waterco variable speed pump, solar panel heating system with heat pump interface, Micron S602 ECO filter filled with Waterco's engineered filter media called Glass Pearls, and fully automated controls to tie all of the components together.
The Hydroxypure system is regarded as the most advanced breakthrough in swimming pool and spa sanitization. It is based on the Advanced Oxidation Process, which combines Perox (H2O2) and hybrid ozone (O3) to turbocharge the sanitization process, leaving nothing but pure water. The use of ozone and Perox increases the active oxygen levels in the water. This synergy between the two disinfectants ensures the safety of water environments without creating harmful chemical by-products. The Perox Treatment Process also removes bacterial threats more effectively than any other oxidization process on the market.
This made Hydroxypure the ideal choice for Derric and Willow, as it offered a healthy water treatment alternative to chlorine that was soft and gentle on the skin. Other benefits of Hydroxypure over chlorine are that it creates no odour or taste. It's the only automated chlorine-free system on the market.
Myriad benefits
Derric likes that the system is easy to use and maintain. Not only is he back in the pool and rash free, Derric says the pool heating system has reduced operating costs and extended his swimming season by two months. The integrated system has also reduced backwashing and resulted in cleaner, clearer water.
The overall result is an unqualified success, with a heartwarming addition.
Thanks to the new system, Willow was able to enjoy being in the water with her foster father a few times before she passed away.
"Willow loved to be in the pool," he said.

Micron S602 ECO filter and Waterco's Glass Pearls filter media at a glance:
- Micron fiberglass vessels consist of an inner shell of fiberglass reinforced with multiple layers of continuous strands of fiberglass filaments.
- Dirt is driven through the filter bed, filled with Waterco's engineered filtration media called Glass Pearls, and trapped in minute spaces between the tiny glass beads of filter media, allowing the cleaned water to pass through the filter's collection laterals and exit via the filter's Multiport valve.
