Mini Crane Used in the Peter Doherty Institute from Preston Hire

Preston (VIC) was recently engaged by Brookfield Multiplex for the supply of a UNIC URW-706 mini crane to facilitate the construction of the Peter Doherty Institute, which is located within the 'Parkville Medical Precinct' on the Corner of Elizabeth Street and Grattan Street in Melbourne.

The design of the $210 million development provides for 12 levels plus two basement levels incorporating a 200-seat auditorium, microbiology and immunology teaching facilities and fully accredited laboratories. Work on-site commenced in May 2011 and construction is due for completion in late 2013.

Hampered by a tight workspace on their busy, inner city construction site, the UNIC URW-706 was perfect for the job because of its compactness and attractive lifting capabilities. The mini crane was required to erect structural steel on the top level of the building to assist construction of a plant room that will house the Institute's mechanical services.

To help the tower crane perform the heavy lift, Preston technicians lightened the weight of the mini crane by removing its outriggers on the ground. It was then reassembled at the top of the building before reporting for duty.

The UNIC URW-706 is best described as a lifting powerhouse. Boasting a massive 6.0t lifting capacity, 19.2m boom and optional fly jib with 0-60° offset, it delivers a capacity and reach equivalent to much larger cranes. Best of all, it is 1670mm wide when stowed and weighs only 8370kg, making it the perfect solution for narrow access area construction.
