PREsealing: An important sealing technique

What is PREsealing? It is a superficial seal, applied before a material is properly sealed. There are a couple of circumstances where presealing is highly recommended to ensure a great result

1) NEW INSTALLATIONS: Picture framing, a permanent stain framing each tile most often occurs where very porous materials are installed. If such materials are not presealed, then the coloured water and wet cement from the grout can bleed into the edges of the tiles leaving a permanent stain. Also, grout residue on the upper surface can bleed into a porous material and leave a permanent stain.

The answer is to PREseal the surface prior to grouting.

With STAIN-PROOF™ this is a simple process, as this product always needs to be applied with 2 coats. The ideal process with a new installation would be to lay the tile, clean it (and ensure it is dry), and then apply the first coat of STAIN-PROOF™ as a preseal. Allow this to cure at least overnight before grouting. Then once the grout is applied, and the grout haze thoroughly removed, the second coat of STAIN-PROOF can be applied over the tile and the grout.

With META CRÉME™, only a single coat is applied. We recommend that a light coat of our Hanafinn OLE REPELLA™ product is applied as a cost effective preseal. The process would be to lay the tile and clean it. Once it is clean and dry, apply a light coat of OLE REPELLA™. The OLE REPELLA™ will be well cured enough after 2-3 hours (depending on the weather) so that tile can be grouted. Once the tile is grouted and the grout haze has been thoroughly removed, the META CRÉME™ can be ap- plied over the tile and grout.

2) VERY POROUS MATERIALS: When an impregnator is used on very porous stone and pavers, we want the sealer to penetrate deeply, but we also need it to be mainly in the upper part of the tile. The danger with such materials is for the sealer to all penetrate and end up deep inside the material leaving the upper surface inadequately sealed.

A light preseal will solve this problem:

a) STAIN-PROOF™ - apply a very light coat of STAIN-PROOF™ the day before you intend to apply the 2 main coats. When you apply the 2 main coats, the preseal will ensure the heavy coats penetrate a tiny bit slower, ensuring that plenty of STAIN-PROOF™ remains in the upper half of the tile. A light coat of OLE REPELLA™ may also be used as a preseal, and will only require 2-3 hours curing time before applying the 2 main coats of STAIN-PROOF ™.

b) META CRÉME™ - apply a very light coat of OLE REPELLA™ as a low cost preseal. The Ole Repella™ will cure enough in 2-3 hours to be able to apply the META CRÉME™.
