Waterproofing the Conservatorium of Music

The Conservatorium of Music adjacent to Sydney's Botanical Gardens is noticed by everybody that comes to Sydney. It is the building in the middle of Macquarie Street that looks like a medieval castle or small palace.

The NSW Government decided some years ago that it required a complete upgrade and accordingly work was commenced in 1999.

The existing building was substantially upgraded but in addition a new building (Verbruggen Hall) was added. This building is actually four separate four-level structures each separated by 50mm of air space.

The waterproofing of the structure was considered to be a critical component of the building process by the NSW Department of Public Works and Services, the NSW Government Architect and the architects Darryl Jackson Robin Dyke.

The waterproofing was made more difficult than usual because of the placement of 12,000 m2 of gardens and landscaping over the structures.

The Wolfin System was chosen because of its ability to be used in landscaping projects and permanently damp situations and its proven track record on Public Works projects.

Wolfin S self-adhesive membrane was laid under the garden beds, Wolfin GWSK was laid under the asphalt in the front driveways and Wolfin AF6 profile was cast into the concrete prior to membrane installation to form a termination for the sheet membranes themselves. All areas were watertested prior to being signed off.

Wolfin's combined materials and labour warranty was issued to the Department of Public Works and services. In essence this warrants not just the performance of the Wolfin System but that the structure is waterproof. Wolfin were able to issue this warranty because they had been involved in the waterproofing design from the beginning and also carried out formal on-site inspections every few days to "sign off" the areas as they were completed. This is a standard Wolfin procedure which is carried out on all Wolfin jobs.

The installation was carried out by Andersal Engineering, experienced licensed Wolfin Applicators, in both remedial and new situations. Andersal can be contacted on 02 9922 1566 or call Henk Van der Heuvel on 0418 465 428.
