Outstanding design projects from every corner of the nation have been shortlisted for the 2016 Australian Interior Design Awards. For well over a decade, this prestigious design program has been celebrating the extraordinary talents of Australia's design practitioners.
Co-presented by the Design Institute of Australia and Artichoke magazine, the Australian Interior Design Awards recognise the best of Australian design across commercial, residential and public design categories. As in previous years, the 2016 shortlist has uncovered a wealth of dynamic, boundary-pushing projects that demonstrate the diverse talents of Australia's design practices, both large and small.
"Rigorous thinking, innovative design and rich materiality are evident throughout this year's shortlist," says event manager Jacinta Reedy. "We're proud to showcase so many outstanding projects that characterise the peak of Australia's design practice."
Awards are presented across Retail, Public, Hospitality, Workplace and Installation categories, as well as Residential Design and Residential Decoration. There are dedicated categories for Interior Design Impact and Emerging Interior Design Practice, as well as Best of State and Best International awards and the Award for Sustainability Advancement. The program culminates with the presentation of the most prestigious accolade - the Premier Award for Australian Interior Design.
"Each year, the calibre of entries continues to impress," continues Ms Reedy. "This year's shortlist reflects the maturity of the Australian design industry, as well as the extraordinary talent and creativity that act as a foundation for so many design practices."
The gala awards dinner is attended by the best and brightest in the industry, with both established practitioners and emerging designers gathering together to celebrate these fine examples of Australian design. The presentation will take place at Sydney's Sofitel Wentworth on Friday 10th June 2016.
The dual stream jury comprises experienced practitioners from across the sector, including Sonda Banney, Architectus (Qld); Mardi Doherty, Doherty Design Studio (Vic); Matt Gibson, Matt Gibson Architecture + Design (Vic); Richard Johnson, Johnson Pilton Walker (NSW); Rosemary Kirkby, Rosemary Kirkby Associates (NSW), Robyn Lindsey, Geyer (Vic); Geraldine Maher, Jackson Interiors (Vic); Alison Page, Alison Page Design (NSW); Phillip Rossington, BVN (NSW); Nick Travers, Techné Architecture + Interior Design (Vic) and Dimmity Walker, Space Agency (WA). John Gersakis, InfoActiv (Vic), is the Sustainability Advisor, and Joanne Cys, Associate Professor in Interior Architecture at the University of South Australia, is the Jury Convenor.
The Australian Interior Design Awards are supported by some of Australia's most well-known and respected suppliers, including Forbo Flooring Systems, Dulux, Business Interiors by Staples, Laminex, Smeg, Space, Bespoke and Shape.
